            Submitted by Deep Singh Bhangu on Thu, 03/21/2013 - 21:03. Health Update India Kerala ThiruvananthapuramThiruvananthapuram, March 21 :

           The country's first such study, using cohort groups, has proven conclusively that smoking bidi (tobacco wrapped in the leaf of the tendu plant) increases the propensity for cancer.P. Jayalekshmi of the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) here, who led the study on bidi-induced lung, oral, laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer, said lung cancer risk among former bidi smokers was higher than in those who never smoked bidis.Separate studies on the impact of bidi smoking on lung and oral cancers, and cancers of larynx and hypopharynx in close to 70,000 men between the age group of 30-84 in Karunagappally in Kollam district shows that bidi is among the most harmful smoking products."The risk of cancer affecting the cheek (buccal) and lips (labial) showed a nearly four-fold increase in the cohort study covering 66,277 men.

          "Excessive use of bidis significantly increased the risk associated with cancer of the gum and mouth," Jayalekshmi said.The mainstream smoke of bidi contains a much higher concentration of carcinogenic hydrocarbons. Bidi smokers also are found to be taking five puffs per minute, compared to two puffs by cigarette smokers in the same time, the study showed.The cohort study on bidi and lung cancer, covering a total of 65,829 men, found that bidi smokers had a 3.9-fold increase in lung cancer incidence, when compared to those who never smoked bidis.The study showed that tongue cancer risk increased significantly among men who smoked bidis for 30 years or longer, and among men who started bidi smoking at 18 years or younger.Yet another cohort study conducted on 69,943 men, again in the 30-84 age group in Karunagappally, shows a significant relationship between bidi smoking and cancers affecting the larynx and hypopharynx.The results show that those with a history of bidi smoking for more than 30 years have a higher risk of laryngeal cancers. Smokers who puff more than 15 bidis a day are at increased risk of hypopharyngeal cancer.Figures with Regional Cancer Centre here show that 821 and 863 males registered as lung and oral cancer patients, respectively, during 2011-12 alone.Another 392 patients registered for care of hypopharyngeal and laryngeal cancers during the same period. As many as 1.6 million males in Kerala smoke bidis and the Karunagappally studies have also reiterated the common knowledge that bidi smoking is more widespread among those with lower levels of education and family income.Bidi smokers in Kerala spend nearly Rs. 140 monthly on this habit.

            The study, however, provides encouragement to those seeking to kick the bidi habit -- the risk of lung cancer is lower in former smokers than current smokers, it showed.The lung cancer risk was found to decrease significantly among those who had stopped bidi smoking for 10 years or longer, when compared to current bidi smokers. Now study proves it - bidi smoking causes cancer Deep Singh Bhangu

            Nowsday, many people have health problem because of eating unbeneficial food, air-pollution, water pollution, etc. Smoking is one cause lead to having health problem such as a cancer. It also leads to being other diseases. There are the first study of the country to use people groups has proven that smoking bidi (tobacco wrapped in the leaf of the tendu plant) increases a cancer.
            P. Jayalekshmi of the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), who led the study on bidi-induced lung, oral, laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer, said lung cancer risk among former bidi smokers have higher risk to be lung cancer than anyone who never smoked bidis. 70,000 men who are 30-84 years old in Kollam district show bidi is the most smoking product leads to being lung and oral cancer. In addition,   too much using bidis increased the risk of the gum and mouth cancer, Jayalekshmi said. From a total of 65,829 men, found that bidi smokers had increase in lung cancer 3.9 %, when compared people who never smoked bidis.
        Regional Cancer Centre show 821 and 863 males registered as lung and oral cancer patients during 2011-12. 392 patients registered for care of Hypopharyngeal and laryngeal cancers during the same period. 1.6 million men in Kerala smoke bidis and smoking is more widespread among lower levels of education and family income.    Bidi smokers in Kerala spend money nearly Rs. 140 per month.  The study, providing encouragement to start to give up smoking bidi get lower risk of lung cancer  lower than smokers in this present smokers. The risk of lung cancer are decreased in people who had stopped bidi smoking for years or longer when compared with bidi smokers in this time.

            To sum up, according to this essay, smoking is increased the risk of being cancer. Furthermore, the risk of cancer was found to increase if people who have smoked for a long time bidi as habit. They are risk to be lung, oral, laryngeal and Hypopharyngeal cancer higher than who never smoke bidi. On contrary, there are found that the risk of lung cancer in people group has stopped smoking bidi for 10 years or more are decreased. In my opinion, our health problem will be decreased if we eat only beneficial food and drinks, exercise 30 minutes per a day, and stop smoking. We will present one proverb about taking care of health that “An apple a day keep the doctor away .”

Learning Log

            Today is July 1st, 2013. There are a lot of thing for learning. It related from last week and new topic. The topic is about writing lesson plan which it’s very important for teaching. Teacher must teach follow by curriculum for learning of student efficiency. Lesson plan has many factors for writing correctly. The topic are two topics; syllabus create and writing lesson plan for learning today.
          The first topic, syllabus create is adding 3 tables; indicator, time and authentic material
For example :

Topic
Vocabulary
Grammar/
Pronunciation
Skills/
Function
Indicator
Time
Authentic
material

             *Indicator finds from curriculum and chooses follow by objective*Time is “What time is teaching?”* Authentic material is “What authentic material is teacher using?”Moreover, student must do analyzing of unite that what strand is student using for writing lesson plan.

           The second topic, writing lesson plan is using many topics for writing efficiency; strand of English, standard based curriculum and objectives. Strand of English has strands; English for communication, English for culture, English for connection and English for community. Standard based curriculum is the one of part in lesson plan because teacher use it for setting the way of teaching. Teacher can use language acquisition, language learning and acquise language. Language acquisition use the process that I + 1 = comprehensible Input < i = input (making pretest – post test), 1= teacher, comprehensible=can understand>These processes are checking the old knowledge of student and add to level 1 of difficult more. And another one process is :

Input
  <ป้อนเข้า>

Process
<กระบวนการ>

Output
<ผลิตที่ออกมา>

outcome
<ความพึงพอใจ>

              Language learning is conscious and acquise language is sub conscious. From this process, teacher should know needs analysis and it’s focus students. Teachers should teach by listening skill start in their teaching because if students listen before doing, they can do other skills correctly. The goal or objective is target of subject by structure that <Ss will be able to + v.1<communicate in macro skills>>. The objectives have 2 type; enabling<จุดประสงค์ นำทาง> and termainal <จุดประสงค์ปลายทาง>. The setting objective must clear, specific and concise.The goal of writing lesson plan compose CLT, accuracy, fluency, interaction and intergrate. Moreover, writing objective must use principle; performance/do, condition/สื่อ and standard/ได้ or teacher can use learning process; learning, teaching, evaluation <L T E>

              To sum up, lesson plan compose strand, standard based curriculum and objective. The setting objective use the structure that <Ss will be able to + v.1>. Strand of English has 4 strands; English for communication, English for culture, English for connection and English for community. In my opinion, I know that listening skill is the first skill in teaching English which student learns easily. I will teach my students by listen to my speck and they repeat after me but I must practice about speaking skill more and more.

  Using National Parks as ClassroomsThis is the VOA Special English Education Report.
           The National Park Service in the United States will mark its one hundredth anniversary in twenty-sixteen. As it nears its second century, the Park Service plans to increase its educational programs for students and teachers.
           The plans include transportation support for one hundred thousand students each year to visit national parks to learn about nature and history.
            Yellowstone is believed to have been the world's first national park when it was established in eighteen seventy-two. Other students will get a chance to see parks in faraway places through Skype and other online programs.
           The National Park Service also works with partners to provide education. One of its partners is a nonprofit organization called NatureBridge. NatureBridge is celebrating its fortieth anniversary and says one million young people have taken part in its programs.
           The organization works with students from kindergarten through twelfth grade and uses national parks as its classrooms. It provides field science programs at Yosemite National Park and four other locations in California and the northwestern state of Washington.
           Now, NatureBridge is launching an East Coast center with a four-million-dollar grant from Google. The program will begin in April at the Prince William Forest Park in Virginia.
            Students stay for three to five days in NatureBridge programs. The activities are aimed at developing their science skills. For example, they learn about different soils and study water quality under a microscope.
            Jason Morris is executive vice president of NatureBridge. He says when they are not sleeping, eating or in a laboratory, the students spend their time outdoors.
             Julia Washburn is associate director of education and interpretation for the National Park Service. She says in a time of budget cuts, the agency has to find ways to still meet its goals.
           JULIA WASHBURN: "We are not likely to get a lot of money in this current economy. This is about doing different work with the money that we have and redirecting resources into it."
          Ms. Washburn says one of the most important services that the Park Service provides every day is nature interpretation. Park rangers try to make visiting the outdoors more meaningful.
         JULIA WASHBURN: "Interpretation is a form of informal education. Essentially, it is a word that we use for the people in parks that explain the park or help orient you. So park rangers are interpreters. They orient you to the place you are in and help you make connections, emotional and intellectual connections, with the place."
       And that's the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Jerilyn Watson. You can find captioned videos of our programs at the VOA Learning English channel on YouTube. I'm Steve Ember.

Summarize:
                      Effective learning is not focused on inside the classroom. A teacher may design environment of classroom that can motivate students to gain knowledge and get new experiences. The teacher would like to apply each of teaching method into classroom such as cooperative learning, content-based learning, task-based learning, etc. In addition, the teacher should ask the students do you prefer to learn inside or outside the classroom and prepare lesson appropriately with students’ learning styles. Now, allowing students to learn outside the classroom is good teaching method because they can gain knowledge in real life situation and see authentic materials. In this section, I prefer to introduce using National park as the classroom. The National Park Service in the United States will sign that it is hundredth anniversary in twenty-sixteen. Because of its nearly second century, the National Park Service plans to increase a way in educational programs for students and teachers. In this section, I prefer to introduce using National park as the classroom.
         The National Park also services transportation for 100,000 students to visit national parks and learn about nature and history. Yellowstone is believed that it will be the first national park of the world established in 1872. Other students also get a chance to see parks in faraway places through online programs. The National Park Service works with NatureBridge to provide education. The organization works with twelfth grade students from kindergarten and uses national parks as classrooms for learning science programs at Yosemite National Park and four other locations in California and the northwestern state of Washington. Students stay for three to five days in NatureBridge programs. The purpose of activities is development about sciences skill. For example, students study of different soils and water quality under a microscope.
            Conclusion, learning outside the classroom is best for students to connect with lesson. When the students study in the classroom, someone always sleeps, talk with friends, less concentrate in learning, etc. These effects come from the teacher like to teach them by using description method. According to this essay, the teacher allows students to learn sciences at The National Park Service, so they can gain knowledge by authentic materials being easier to understand and motivate them to study. In my opinion, I agree with teaching students by guide them to real situation because they will enjoy with learning. It also is a good way to recognize what they have learned as longer. What do you have idea for this teaching method?  If you are students who have learned outside the classroom like this, I would like to know how you feel.

             Using National Parks as Classrooms                                                                                                            Vocabulary

Less Sleep May Trigger More Snacking, Calories

           March 12, 2013 | By Health Editor

                                                                                   Reading Skill

    MONDAY, March 11 (Health Day News) — Too little sleep with unlimited food availability leads to too much eating and weight gain, according to a small new study.
        “I don’t think extra sleep by itself is going to lead to weight loss,” Kenneth Wright, director of the Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory at the University of Colorado, Boulder, said in a university news release.“Problems with weight gain and obesity are much more complex than that. But I think it could help.”
        Wright and colleagues monitored 16 young, lean, healthy male and female adults who lived for about two weeks at the University of Colorado Hospital, which has a sleep suite. For the first three days, all the participants had the opportunity to sleep nine hours a night and were given meals that contained only enough calories to maintain their weight.
        For the next five-day period, the participants were split into two groups. One group’s sleep was limited to five hours a night, while the other group could sleep for nine hours. Both groups were offered larger meals and had access to healthy and unhealthy snacks throughout the day. After those five days, the groups switched.
        On average, participants whose sleep was limited to five hours burned 5 percent more energy than those who could sleep for nine hours, but they consumed 6 percent more calories.
       Participants who got less sleep also tended to eat smaller breakfasts but binged on after-dinner snacks. The total number of calories they consumed in evening snacks was larger than the calories in any single meal, according to the study, which is scheduled for March publication in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
        That finding adds to growing evidence that overeating at night may contribute to weight gain, the researchers said.
        Men and women responded differently to having as much food as they wanted, the study found. Men gained some weight even with sufficient sleep, while women maintained their weight. Both men and women gained weight when their sleep was limited to five hours.
       “If we can incorporate healthy sleep into weight-loss and weight-maintenance programs, our findings suggest that it may assist people to obtain a healthier weight,” Wright said.

Summarize:

Less Sleep May Trigger More Snacking, Calories    March 12, 2013 | By Health Editor                                Nowadays, most people have to spend their live as fast lead to having less time to take care of them. Moreover, they have to work harder to get much money. Workers always spend their time for working, so they rarely have enough time to relax, go shopping, exercise at fitness, etc. Some workers work hard all days and nights. Our bodies like battery. If you work hard every day, your battery will be low and being used up. You have to charge your battery being full all the time for running your live. Sleep well is important factor for relaxing your life in new day.  In this section, I prefer to talk about effects of less sleeping.

           Some people always less sleep leads to eating more and increasing calories. Wright and colleagues checked 16 healthy male and female adults who lived for two weeks at the University of Colorado Hospital. For the first three days, everyone had the opportunity to sleep nine hours per night and was given meals that contained only enough calories to maintain their weight. Nine days later, everyone is divided into two groups. One group sleeps five hours per night, while another group could sleep for nine hours. Both groups were offered larger meals and had access to healthy and unhealthy snacks throughout the day. After those five days, the groups switched

        On average, people who sleep five hours burned more energy 5 percent than who sleep for nine hours, but they consumed more calories 6 percent. According to the study, researcher said there is finding that eating too much at night may lead to weight gain. Both men and women can eat as much as they want. Men may gain some weight even sufficient sleep, while women maintained their weight. Both men and women gained weight when they are limited to sleep five hours. If we can incorporate healthy sleep into weight-loss program, researchers suggest that it may help people to maintain their healthy weight.

          Conclusion, sleep enough can maintain your energy as usual. Many people may overlook health. Health also is important thing for your life. In daily routine, someone has to wake up in early morning, have less time to eat breakfast, go to school, office or the others. places. During a day, they have to spend their live from a day until a night without stopping. People who work until midnight and less sleep will eat much than people who sleep enough an average 9 hours a night. In my opinion, I think sleep enough for a day leads to saving your health as long as you can.
